A favourite Aussie….

[In song] On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me some Chardonnay, a favourite Aussie….

Chardonnay is back, it never really went away, it has held its position in the list of the nation’s top 3 white wines for years and is the world’s best selling white year after year. It’s the mars bar of the wine world, while everyone is talking about their 70% cocoa bar of Green & Blacks (read Sauvignon Blanc for wine), they’re secretly looking forward to tucking into the squished mars bar at the bottom of their handbag on their way home (or unloved bottle of Chardonnay they sneaked into the basket at Tesco).

For the festive period it’s a crowd pleaser for parties and for pairing with a large variety of food, add to that the fact that Australian Chardy as you used to know it has all but disappeared and you’re onto a winner. Wine makers are using less oak, allowing the grapes to speak for themselves and concentrating on growing their Chardonnay in cooler climates to achieve fresher and more elegant flavours like William Hardy Chardonnay 2013* from South Australia. Made from predominantly cool climate grapes from Padthaway, McLaren Vale and some warm climate grapes from Riverland it is perfumed with aromas of fruit pastilles, citrus fruits, mango, ripe peaches, ripe melon and a light spicy oakiness. Its texture is voluptuous but has a refreshing streak on the finish that characterises all good new style Australian Chardonnay.

Forget ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) right now it’s AAC (All About Chardonnay).

Available at Tesco, £8.99.
