All that sparkles…..

Friday, October 29th, 2010

It’s not very en vogue to boast about indulging in wine of the bubbly variety, especially when most of its Champagne. But given the circumstances I think you’ll forgive me. And besides it doesn’t count as frivolous if someone else buys it for you, does it?? You see there’s been some big news chez Miss Bouquet ….. last week Mr B and I got engaged!! Now then, before you log off and vow never to return to my site again please be assured that I’m not the kind of girl that will let the wedding take over every conversation. And to prove it I’ll get straight to the point. The sparkling list so far reads:

Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvee NV (x 2!)
Champagne Perrier Jouët Grand Brut NV*
Champagne Mumm Brut NV
Champagne Veuve Clicquot Brut NV
Champagne Piper-Heidseick Brut NV
and…. Anna de Codornui Cava Brut NV

Its like a who’s-who from the Champagne Information Bureau’s annual trade tasting, with a Cava thrown in to keep a girl level-headed.

I’m pleased to report they were all very good in their own way. ‘Most improved’ went to Piper-Heidseick which I noticed burnt less on the back of the throat than when I last tried it…. and ‘most revealing’ went to Champagne Perrier Jouët Grand Brut NV which I realised on opening that I had yet to ever taste. Yes, I was surprised too. It’s such a familiar brand with its iconic white flowers and champagne shrine on the 5th floor of Harvey Nichols, London. But when did you last see someone drinking a bottle? It seems to me to be a Champagne that’s everywhere and nowhere at the same time which is why I was unconvinced to read in The Drinks Business Brands Report 2010 that Perrier-Jouët is the 10th best selling Champagne by volume in the UK. Perhaps I’ve under estimated the popularity and success of the Harvey Nichols bar, a situation I have decided to rectify by visiting tout de suite to see for myself. I will report back!

And from one big decision to another. When I get married… will that make me Mrs Bouquet….??!!

* Champagne Perrier Jouët Grand Brut NV is available at Oddbins, £34.99

  4. Interesting read about the Perrier Jouet. I clearly remember we pleased our French boss when we, the Italian Team at the French bank I was working for during my City times, decided to send cases of these elegant bubbles to all our Italian customers. Well, it was a particularly excellent Christmas time!
    Thank you Miss B!

Congrats on the engagement Miss B. I wonder if after the wedding the website will have to change to MRS B? Anyways, me and my hubby just got married in Oct 2010 and it was a truly wonderful day. As we are both very interested in wine we managed to enjoy some of the bubbly you mentioned on the day but to our big surprise we ended up taking another 5 bottles home that were gifts. Think someone was trying to tell us something. Keepup the good work, Debs
