Code red…. National Burger Day….

Friday, August 22nd, 2014

National Burger DayForget the Bake Off, it’s time for the humble burger’s 10 minutes of fame. Everywhere we look pubs and restaurants are striving to make the perfect burger so it’s no surprise a day has been created to acknowledge it’s importance as a staple piece of British cuisine. Yes it’s National Burger Day on the 27th August and the thoughtful Mr Hyde has got restaurants and pubs across the land to celebrate by offering 20% off burgers that day.

Count. Me. In.

Thing is, with the bank holiday upon us I can’t help but thinking there’ll be a few burgers on BBQ’s this weekend too. If that sounds like you then here are my top picks for that perfect of pairings:

Pullham’s Bin 22 Shiraz 2011, Barossa, South Australia, Virgin Wines, £12.99 currently on offer to £9.74
Ozzie Shiraz too obvious for a BBQ? Think again. This one is inky, spicy, warming, herbal and slightly floral, bursting with blackcurrant, great freshness, black plums and a touch of liquorice. It’ll pack a punch with your BBQ meats or warm your cockles on it’s own.

Finca Constancia 2011, Castilla, Spain, M&S, £10.99
There’s no hiding from the barrels with this one. With more than just a seasoning of oak, this Spanish red blend has enough vanillariness to knock out some of the best Rioja’s. Big. Full bodied. Mr Bouquet LOVED it. S
mokey, ripe, sweet cherry fruit, vanilla and a hint of dark chocolate bitterness which adds to a welcoming freshness to the finish. And if you’re wondering it’s a blend of 30% Syrah, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 13% Petit Verdot, 12% Graciano and 5% Tempranillo. An new world red from an old world country. Now we’re talking.
