Essenze Waipara Pinot GrisThe last time there was a Royal wedding I was two. My parents and all the neighbours held a full on street party, the kind you were allowed to throw in those days without sending off for a pack on health and safety guidelines or gain permission from the council to have a good time. Twenty-nine years on and I’m not only old enough to throw my own street party but I find myself recently engaged and planning a wedding of my own.

It’s all been a bit over whelming so far. Having never really indulged in the dream of a big wedding Mr B was a bit shocked when I said ‘yes’ and then failed to produce a wedding scrap book containing images of our perfect day. In hindsight a bit of time spent thinking about the sort of wedding I’d like wouldn’t have been time misspent as without it every decision so far has been filled with doubt. The venue, the stationary, the dress, the photographer. Each decision has come with an equal dose of sleepless nights and compromise.

When recently confiding in a close friend she wisely told me something I shall live by whilst making my wedding plans as much as I shall throughout my marriage. Choose your battles wisely and the smaller details will take care of themselves. And no two brides are the same. A designer dress to one will be what the 3* Michelin food and the horse and cart à la Katie Price is to the other. For this bride though the battle is with the wine and despite everyone telling me ‘it’s my day’ when it comes to wine it’s a battle you have to pay to win. The choice has been to pay through the nose to select from the venue’s list of cheap plonk or pay corkage for the privilege of choosing what I actually want to serve. All I know for now is there will be no compromise on wine on my big day and its one piece of research that I shall enjoy every moment of. For now though I’ve got 6 months to decide but here’s a sneak peak at the wines already ranking highly on my list. I wonder what Kate and William will be serving?

Chateau GuiotFor the wedding breakfast you need to find two crowd pleasers especially if you’re serving a choice of starters, main and dessert. Essenze Pinot Gris 2009 from the Waipara region of NZ is a great example of a versatile white that will please and interest your guests. £11.99 from Sainsbury’s, Pinot Gris is the classier sister of Italian Pinot Grigio and this one is laden with white tangy fruits aromas and a warming palate of tropical pineapple, lychee, and honeyed citrus flavours. It’ll go with vegetarian starters and your lighter fish based mains.

Choose your red carefully. You don’t want your guests falling over too early on in the proceedings so it’s important to get one that’s not too heavy! Try a wine like Chateau Guiot from the Costières de Nimes region of the Rhône in France. A blend of Grenache and Syrah it’s a scented and moreish steal from Majestic at £5.99!

Miss Bouquet’s top tip:.
Choosing bubbles for your wedding can be a tricky decision. It’s one of the biggest days of your life so if you ask me there is no alternative to Champagne. My favourite of the moment is Champagne Mumm Vintage 2002 (£38.80 from www.ChampagneDirect.co.uk): the nose is aromatic with floral notes and a hint of freshly baked bread followed by a rich and buttery palate that is perfect to serve with fish, pork and cheese based canapés.

    Rioja would be the perfect red to serve with lamb and there are some great ones out there to chose from. Will you be selecting your wine from the wine list at your venue or have you got the freedom to shop around and serve the wine of your choice?
